The Michigan Council for the Social Studies proudly presents its 2026 Olympiad theme: "Social Studies for All: Exploring the Bill of Rights." This year’s theme calls on students to dive deeply into the foundational freedoms that shape American democracy. Rooted in the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights safeguards our individual liberties—freedom of speech, religion, and the press; the right to a fair trial; protection from unreasonable searches and seizures; and more.

“Social Studies for All” emphasizes that every student—regardless of background, ability, or identity—has a voice in our democratic story. Through research, debate, creative expression, and community engagement, students will explore how the Bill of Rights continues to evolve and influence life in the United States. Participants will examine both historical roots and modern interpretations, reflecting on how these rights have been protected, challenged, and expanded over time. They will also consider how the Bill of Rights applies to current issues—from digital privacy to freedom of expression on social media—making connections between the past and the present.

By engaging with this theme, students won't just study the Bill of Rights—they will embody it. They'll become thoughtful citizens who understand their rights, recognize their responsibilities, and are empowered to participate in our constitutional democracy.
