Michigan Council for the Social Studies Awards Program
Look around you! Are you working with someone whom you consider an excellent social studies educator or student? Does this person do an excellent job in the classroom and/or in your school district? Does this person contribute to the profession by taking leadership roles within the educational community and show a willingness to share ideas with colleagues by presenting seminars and workshops, publishing social studies related articles in professional journals, etc? If so, nominate them for an MCSS Award.
If you know someone who exhibits these attributes, then please NOMINATE HIM/HER for one of the following categories:
¨ Educator of the Year (Elementary, Middle Level, High School)
¨ Student Teacher of the Year
¨ Student Award (Elementary, Middle Level, High School)

Deadline for Nomination submission is Monday, September 23, 2013.
Any MCSS member may nominate.
Self nominations will be accepted.
Nominations are not restricted to students or student teachers you are working with during the 2013-2014 school year. They can be nominated for accomplishments during the 2012-2013 school year.
Nominees cannot be nominated for the award in more than one category (i.e. junior high/middle schools teachers are ineligible for the secondary award)
Demonstrated exceptional abilities in at least four of the five categories listed below:
- Develop or use instructional materials creatively and effectively.
- Incorporate innovative and effective instructional strategies and techniques.
- Utilize themes identified in Michigan Standards and Benchmarks.
- Demonstrated ability to foster the development of democratic beliefs and values, and the skills needed for citizen participation appropriate to students’ grade level in classroom, school and community settings
- Evidence of professional involvement in activities such as workshops,
- Curriculum development, committees and other MCSS association activities.
Nomination Requirements for Teachers/Student Teachers
Letter of nominations (needed only if someone is nominating you for the award.)
Letters of Support. Two letters supporting your application from your school district, from your immediate supervisor and/or building colleagues.
Vita or Professional Resume prepared by the nominee (listing degrees offered by US accredited institutions only.)
Current Teaching Assignment. Description of nominee’s current teaching assignment (to verify eligibility.)
50 word biography
Photo, high resolution jpg, emailed
Applicant Narrative describing how he/she meets the criteria listed (not to exceed two (2) one-sided double spaced 8 1/2 x 11 pages.)
Nomination Requirements for Students
Letter of nomination (from principal and at least two teachers).
Brief statement about the student which supports the nomination of this award.
Samples of student’s work, accomplishments, awards, community service projects, extra curricular activities, etc.
Each set of nomination materials should be in a loose-leaf ring binder, spiral, etc. that contains subject dividers that identify materials by the nomination requirement headings listed.
